In 1972, Ron Reagan (no relation of the President) had a near-death experience. Bleeding massively in the back of an ambulance, he “died” on the way to hospital. But that was not the end. God took him to Hell, the very “lake of fire” described in Revelation 20. Friends were there, so were relatives; people whom he had known but who had since died. And they were on fire, all of them. And they were burning, for ever burning in the flames that never went out, in bodies that were never consumed. He heard their screaming. He could discern their cries. In the horror he could make out their pleading. His blood ran cold. He froze in terror. “Ronnie, don’t come here; there’s no way out; no escape; there’s no way back!” But Ron did go back; that one time he did revive; he did live. But it was with a fear and dread like no other, of a place he could not forget; of cries he would always remember; of a Hell he had seen and heard and should have gone to. Yet, for Ronnie the nightmare did end; the depression he suffered did lift; the darkness that enveloped his soul did flee away. And how? …. This is how: God “saved” him; Jesus “saved” him. He became a Christian. He heard the Gospel, and he responded. In an instant God transformed his whole life; He gave him a new heart; He changed his nature – he was “Born Again!” In a moment, God freely gave him a complete Salvation; the gift of His Spirit; and the assurance of a glory that would never end. His sins were forgiven; God was now his Father, and Jesus his Saviour. His future was secure, and this time it was Heaven, and not Hell, for ever. In short, Ron was a changed person, with a brand-new life, and who, since 1972, has been a minister and preacher of the Gospel. For the Gospel also speaks of pain and suffering, anguish, and despair, only this time it’s not in Hell but on the Cross. For there, the same infinite wrath of a holy God against sin fell on Jesus – God’s Lamb – and not on us. That’s the Good News; that’s how Ron and all the redeemed of all the ages could be set free from the punishment their sin deserved; by simply looking to Christ who died for them. And so, Ron was finally “saved,” without ever going back to the “lake of fire”, with its damnation of the wicked and torment of the lost. Thus, it was to become Ron’s life, his ministry, his calling, to tell anyone and everyone who would listen, about what he saw and heard that fateful day, all those years ago, when God took him to Hell. And so, in his own words, this is Ron’s story. For in God’s words, “whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” Rev 20:15.
